A few months down the line, he bought a brand new BlackBerry Bold phone. These were the days of BB craze. It was beginning to get at me. Here was I using a Nokia radio phone that has been in existence for years while my friend’s using state of the art gadgets. Once again I told myself that I can afford one even if it’s fairly used five year old BB. So I looked at my budget again and decided it wasn’t wise to leap now. Again I rested.

Not long afterwards, he brought home an SUV. It was at this juncture that I quit playing the competition game in my mind with this guy and told myself that we do not have the same financial strength and hence there was no basis on which I would bear any comparism with him in that regard, so I switched off my emotion concerning the things he acquired or procured.

Many people are like pretty much as I use to be, they are working tirelessly day and night just to keep up with the Joneses. Because Jenifer uses a Benz 2010 model car, I must buy a 2012 model. It does not matter if I need it or not, neither does it really matter if I earn enough money to finish paying for it in five years should my salary be completely deducted from source and nothing is left for me.

The drum major instinct as psychoanalysts call it, is argued to be the predominant instinct in man; the desire for recognition. This is the urge to stand out, to be different, desired, respected and accepted.

Ever wondered why someone who planned to buy just one bottle of table water will carry a carton of it out of the mini mart just because he met a girl in the shelve area and had to impress her. Why a man would walk into a boutique and see two shirts made by the same shirt maker of the same material and design, given that the prices are different (say N3,000 and N10,000), but he opted for the higher price and walks home smiling that he bought the genuine one just because he bought it for N10,000? This trend has been the royal wings on which many people rode to success and fame. Same is a form of suction force that drew so many people down a spiral decline that has ended in their destruction.

Amazingly we live in a time and age in which we have been deceived into believing that the kind of phone a man uses is directly proportional to the amount he has in his bank account. We have come to believe that the kind of car a man drives has everything to do with the amount of money he has sitting in his bank account. So everyone does all within their reach to make everyone believe they are well to do. I’ve got to buy this Range Rover car since no one drives a Range Rover in my estate. It would not matter I don’t earn enough to procure it. It would not matter if I would still be paying for this car long after I have stopped using it, even if it comes at high compound interest rates. This is the reason why many people end neck-deep in debt and do not see how they could be untangled from it in the nearest future.

I dare to ask you, must you get that expensive apartment using a loan facility just to prove that you have arrived? Or say buy the latest BlackBerry Z10 because that’s what the city’s biggest ladies are using now and you have to join the flow even if you cannot afford it? Who are you deceiving my friend? Must you continue playing the catch-up game with your life and never be anyone original but a photocopy? Stop keeping up with the joneses my friend, you would never catch up!

She was particularly bitter that it was becoming a norm that people we look up to for mentorship are NOT ‘walking their talk’. Rather, they have become authorities in their ‘art’ simply by becoming motivational speakers and not ‘doers’ of the art. The worse of it all is their tendency to be arrogant about WHY they are correct in what they say and do NOT do. This is sad!!!

After she vented all she had to say, I took time to explain the following:

#1: Mentors are HUMAN!

They have MOTIVES for all they do. Every protégé must determine to follow DEVOID of ‘motive searching’. Follow to learn; don’t follow to investigate!!!

#2: Mentors are NOT blanket Mentors.

They have specific strengths where you should be mentored and not expect a full rounded package of Mentorship.  What this means is that: I can have a Mentor who helps me learn ‘making the most of opportunities’, another helps me understand ‘Spiritual Consistency’, another may be a Mentor in ‘Financial Discipline’, etc. This way, when my ‘Spiritual Mentor’ is failing in ‘Financial Discipline,’ I am not discouraged. I know where his ‘mentoring’ strength lies.

After sharing these short tips with her, I sank back into my serenity to reflect on the impacts I have had with people whom I also looked up to.  Truth is: we all have scars!!!

From experience, I have observed that more people are careful about mentoring others these days, me inclusive. This is because there has been a lot of abuse of the methodology of Mentoring. Mentoring goes far beyond being called a title. It is a responsibility and a privilege. Privilege; because not everyone has the chance to build a life that another wishes to model after. Responsibility; because once you are being modeled after, you owe someone a transparent life of service.

My own scars include the realities that:

Some Mentors hardly communicate/share: There are moments of emergencies, urgent need for counsel, advice or information. The Internet does NOT know the Nigerian terrain as much as an experienced Mentor does but when he is unavailable via email, SMS, BBM chat, et al… you are at loss.

Some Mentors NEED mentoring in the methodology of mentoring: People are AWESOME from AFAR but they turn out to be FAR from AWESOME. I have learnt to be careful whom I pursue to mentor me going forward. They are only a facade from a distance. When you go an inch closer, they actually turn out to be ‘grabbers,’ where ‘What have you got?’ is their motive.

When the chips are down, you are on your own, most times: Truth is ‘it is ONLY you who has YOUR OWN solution’. Mentors will, at most, ‘motivate’, ‘encourage’, ‘inspire’, and ‘talk to you’. A few may go the EXTRA mile to ‘give’ you any interventions and support (which is dicey and not usually recommended). This means that you OWE YOURSELF the RESPONSIBILITY to BUILD YOUR CAPACITY for the rainy day: when the chips are down.

Mentors also NEED support: These people we have and hold to highest expectations also have areas where their shoes pinch badly. I have learnt to give them their own space to tend to their own wounds. I would rather pray the best for them because ‘the good of the tree is the good of the bird.’

In summary, I have said two things in all of these words:

Follow Mentors to learn from them; don’t follow Mentors to investigate them.

Build your own capacity to also be of benefit to your own Mentor because when the chips are down, you are on your own.

The modern definition of the subject of this post has made the need to write the post even more compelling. Many have missed it as a result of their inability to distinguish between these two words. Let’s consider these two words and compare them?

The word success as defined by Wikipedia as “The achievement of something planned, desired or attempted”. While on the other hand, perfection can be described as the condition, state or quality of being free or as free as possible from all possible flaws or defects.

These two words if put in contrast can be said to contradict each other as it will only mean that there would be no need to attempt, plan or desire something, it is already there! You already posses the ability to make your desire come to life. You can become whatever you desire without going through any stress. Everything is just there for you! At the snap of your finger, everything come to be! Mind you, this is not true! The world is not meant for perfect people. Sure you agree with me?

Perfection is not a common virtue common among men; in fact, no man can claim to be perfect. Why is it then confused for success? Perfection is a trade-mark only associate with God. He made man with perfection but man lost it as soon as he fell to the serpent (Devil) ever since, he has strived and will continue to strive to attain perfection. Little wonder why they say we all aim towards perfection! Never heard anyone say that he/she has achieved it! Man will always aim to achieve this but the best we can record can only be success! The best a man can achieve is to be successful in his/her attempt in accomplishing a set goal or target.

The misconception surrounding the subject of this post has led a lot of people astray. Men with goals and aspirations have lost it as a result of their inability to fully understand what success really mean. No wonder scriptures said “my people perish because of lack of wisdom.”

An attempt just as earlier mentioned to accomplish a particular goal or target has already put you enroute the path to success. Your ability to be consistent, dogged and determined to accomplish that particular goal will confirm you as being successful though someone somewhere else with a similar goal might go even a step further. That point when you feel you have achieved success might just be a stage for another person towards accomplishing that similar goal or even a part of the process. In anyway, that point when you gain personal satisfaction after an attempt or fulfillment of a desired goal or target is when you can say you have achieved success.

Get it right, a proper definition of your goal will give you a proper insight as to when success is achieved. Therefore, it is very important when setting a goal that you  attach a purpose to it and properly define your objective, thoughts like “what do I intend to achieve?” “Is it really necessary for me to do this”? “What will happen if I don’t do it?” should always be considered when setting a goal.

The lesson that should be taken from this post is simple: don’t work with someone else’s clock (timing). Clearly define and be purposeful when setting a goal or target. At that point when you feel you are satisfied with what you have achieved, then you can congratulate yourself and be glad you achieved success. Only a not well defined goal will lead to confusion not even perfection as it was intended.

Now that you know, I believe you can retrace your steps if you have missed it and get that goal right. Change your mind set about success and tap into the real meaning. Aim to be successful.

Remember, success doesn’t mean perfection; you can always try again!

What decisions do you need to make today in order to start moving toward the top of your field? Whatever it is, either to get in or get out, make a decision today and then get started. This single act alone can change the whole direction of your life.

Seven Steps to Success

There is a powerful seven step formula that you can use to set and achieve your goals for the rest of your life. Every single successful person uses this formula or some variation of this formula to achieve vastly more than the average person. And so can you. Here it is:

Step #1: Decide What You Want

Step number one, decide exactly what it is you want in each part of your life. Become a “meaningful specific” rather than a “wandering generality.”

Step #2: Write it Down

Second, write it down, clearly and in detail. Always think on paper. A goal that is not in writing is not a goal at all. It is merely a wish and it has no energy behind it.

Step #3: Set a Deadline

Third, set a deadline for your goal. A deadline acts as a “forcing system” in your subconscious mind. It motivates you to do the things necessary to make your goal come true. If it is a big enough goal, set sub-deadlines as well. Don’t leave this to chance.

Step #4: Make a List

Fourth, make a list of everything that you can think of that you are going to have to do to achieve your goal. When you think of new tasks and activities, write them on your list until your list is complete.

Step #5: Organize Your List

Fifth, organize your list into a plan. Decide what you will have to do first and what you will have to do second. Decide what is more important and what is less important. And then write out your plan on paper, the same way you would develop a blueprint to build your dream house.

Step #6: Take Action

The sixth step is for you to take action on your plan. Do something. Do anything. But get busy. Get going.

Step #7: Do Something Every Day

Do something every single day that moves you in the direction of your most important goal at the moment. Develop the discipline of doing something 365 days each year that is moving you forward. You will be absolutely astonished at how much you accomplish when you utilize this formula in your life every single day.

Action Exercises 

Here are two things you can do to put these ideas into action immediately.

• First, decide exactly what you want, write it down with a deadline, make a plan and take action – on at least one goal – today!
• Second, determine the price you will have to pay to achieve this goal and then get busy paying that price – whatever it is.

True Independence is when you are able to discover your purpose on earth, pursue it with passion and bless humanity with your existence. But the irony is this, your financial breakthrough is sometimes attached to your pursuit of purpose and dreams. Therefore what are you doing today to secure your financial independence?

A lady took up painting at the age of 85. She didn’t want to dabble with oil painting in her younger days. Friends and families discouraged her, “oil paints are very expensive, you can’t afford to have such an expensive hobby and you can never make a living off it.”

She never thought of it again. She worked as a secretary all her life supplementing for family’s income. At the age of 85 she finally bought the oil paints and picked up the brush to paint. In one year, she made more money from selling her paintings than what she had earned in her entire working life.

Lesson:  I believe everyone is born with talent and by using your talent appropriately, you can earn as much money as you care to.

Making money should not be hard. Why should you go without all your life’s desires when you were born to have it all? Remember, you can never be rich working for somebody else, you must be in business for yourself. Making money is easy if only you know how.

By putting your talent to use, your neighbours will swear you are operating a secret wonder bank. And in no time you will become the bread winner of your family. You don’t need anybody’s permission to be rich, you are destined to succeed.

It is high time we stopped going to higher institution of learning for the sole purpose of getting a degree which will qualify us “to get a job” after graduation. That kind of ambition is the ambition to become a well paid SLAVE for life?

The unfortunate thing about this is that the “jobs” you are preparing for are in short supply and many times not available. The government that had traditionally provided jobs can no longer be relied on. It led the way in the retrenchments which ravaged the country not long ago.

Many people says a good job means security. This has been proved to be falsehood. Anyone who has a boss can be retrenched, blackmailed or frustrated out. Examples abound.

Can you imagine what a terrible shock it is to a man who has been enjoying a fat income to suddenly find himself out on the street? The experience could be shattering. You cannot feel secure when somebody has that power over you.

You can never be independent when someone has the power to tell you how many hours you must work, how long a vacation you may have and even as it actually happens in many cases – what kind of clothes you may or may not wear!

The man who has the brain and energy to get to the top in a big company and earn a “fat” salary could very likely become a MILLIONAIRE even a BILLIONAIRE, were he to apply that energy and brain power to his own talent.

One of the greatest mastery possible in the lifespan of a man is that of time, surprisingly it often seems the most difficult. Far easier it is to guide, direct and most of all discipline other people than applying those selfsame principles to oneself, that being the most difficult. Not much people have come to the realization of the demographics of this simplistic fact that time is the key ingredient of life and so should not be used anyhow.

I remember with some keen sense of interest as if it were yesterday that I was appreciating my Christmas break. I had taken my time to make plans for the on-coming year while pointing out errors I made the previous one but here we are, April seemed to have crept in on us as if we weren’t expecting it. January is gone and February and March too.

Below are a few info that would help make your April a fabulous one.

Never Spend On Anything You Don’t Need:

One mistake you must be more careful to avoid is spending more than you need this month. A popular saying goes ‘if you spend get the things you don’t need just to impress, you will soon sell the things you have to get what you need’. We live in an age and time where the younger generation is always tempted to believe a lie. We are tempted to believe that the worth of an individual is directly proportional to the kind of apparel he puts on, the kind of watch, phone, tablet PC or the car he uses. Somehow howbeit unconsciously, we have learnt to keep up with the Joneses. I need to get this new blackberry phone ‘cause it is the latest in town. I need to change my car ‘cause a newer model is in town. I need to get that gown ‘cause it’s a little better than what Jenifer wore yesterday. Not because I need it, but because I want it. Not even because I want it but because others have it and so, I must have it too. So people whose salary towers somewhere around half a million Naira see themselves broke at the end of each month. They are already in debt and would even borrow from the youth corper in the office. That is the reason why you get a brand new car on a loan plan that would make you still be paying for the car years after you have disposed of it; not because you don’t have a good car but because the other guy in the offer got a Honda car and you want to show him that you are not in the same class with him so you buy a BMW on a loan plan whose compound interest alone would buy the same car five time but you weren’t aware simply because you have to be like Jimmy.

Be Productive:

Don’t be deceived, activity doesn’t necessarily translate to productivity. A thousand and one people out there are simply busy, but just a handful are productive. They hardly have time to attend to other people and things. Many think that all that is required is that they are busy. It can often be annoying to realize that you have worked all day but at the end of the day have not achieved twenty percent of what is expected of you. I will tell you why, it is because you have left the most important things and faced the unimportant. No sane man would argue that you had not been busy, but when your productive co-workers submit their work, your barely-scratched workload will pale excessively when placed by their side to bear comparism. To avoid this, simple make a list of what has to be done starting from the most important, then begin your work starting from the most important. Don’t come to work in the morning and the first thing you do is to check your personal mail, attend to twitter, update ‘Another day at work’ on Facebook and ‘Its gon be a long day’ on BBM. Then you keep going back and forth to check if anyone has commented so you reply, already, your day is almost half messed up, because you may not be able to disentangle yourself from the incessant chatting and disturbances that would bring, well except you work as a social media expert. If you use a blackberry or an i-phone or any smart phone and you are allowed to take calls at work, please change the ringing profile to phone calls only, so your phone would only ring when you have phone calls alone, so you can concentrate on your job.

Don’t wait for anybody to motivate you:

Motivate yourself. America uses a phrase I like so much, they would always say, ‘Pull yourself up by your bootstrap.’ Somehow I have fallen in love with that phrase. The day that maturity begins in any being is the day that he or she begins to understand that in reality, you are on your own. Please do not get me wrong, I am not trying to deny the significance of the God factor. If you don’t motivate yourself, I wonder who will. Truth is, except in very few cases of mishap where we may need to be assisted by another, every man is expected to be up and doing at work. A thousand and one people work at jobs they out rightly hate but sometimes you ask yourself why do they still stick to it for one, two , three, four, five and more years? It is because the desired is not available, the available becomes desirable. They had to motivate themselves to carry on. A man can survive almost any tragedy provided the spirit in him is still encouraging him to hold on, the day his spirit should let go, that would be the end. So pull yourself up by your bootstrap, don’t wait for your boss to serve you a memo or a warning letter to do that. Don’t wait for a sack letter or a balance sheet indicating red before you do that.

Never forget you are your own boss:

No matter what happens, under no circumstance should you forget that you are your own boss. Be you a student, self-employed, employed, underemployed, over-employed ( if there is any such word) individual whatever you choose to address your status as, we are responsible for what happens to us. Quit the blame game, stop living in denial and face your responsibilities head-on. Nobody is interested in your excuses, they may be substantial, people may even pity you after you narrate your excuse in details, but the truth is excuses would not pay the bills. No matter how good your excuses may be, people pay for results and not god excuses. If because you don’t like your job, and it is because you are not well paid, so you try to trudge along, going with the flow without adding substantial value to the establishment, I can only tell you one thing, it won’t be long. It won’t take long for your boss to discover. You may think you are doing it to avenge yourself, but one day, he will relieve you of the job you have complained all your life about. If you don’t like the job, why did you take it in the first place? That very job others will do it better than you for half the salary, no matter how bad. So why you are still there, give it your best shot, if not for anything for the sake of the future, what goes around comes around. Some students think they are doing their parents a favor by going to school. Labor market will teach them the necessary lesson they need to learn.
